ABOUT Mia Zabelka is a noise artist, composer and experimental violinist and vocalist from Vienna, with Czech, Jewish and French family background. After completing her training with a strong classical emphasis, she continued to construct and explore the limits of sound and music in a language entirely her own, based on the de-/re-construction of the violin’s sonic possibilities, expanding the range of the instrument using live electronic devices, preparing it through the insertion of alien objects between or on the strings and innovative performance techniques. The elemental physicality in the title of her latest solo release, ‘Cellular Resonance’, reflects her ongoing engagement with gesture and sound and ever-evolving exploration of her instrument. For this album, Zabelka’s distinctive processed violin sounds, screaming, howling and moaning through adapted analogue and digital guitar effects, have been churned through the mill of none other than performance doyenne Lydia Lunch in her lesser known role as producer and co- composer. Mia Zabelka has collaborated with a string of exciting artists from around the world, such as Pauline Oliveros, Phill Niblock, Robin Rimbaud, Lydia Lunch, Dälek, John Zorn, Alexei Borisov, Electric Indigo, John Russell, Maggie Nicols and Elliott Sharp. She has given concerts and performances at many Festivals throughout Europe,America and Asia and is a three-time winner of the Prix Ars Electronica.
